Volunteers began RUBARB in March 2006, after constantly collecting unused flood bikes, pulling them from garbage piles in the streets, and fixing them up for both residents and volunteers. Bikes that would have otherwise been sitting in an overflowing dump of Post Katrina rubbish, are now being reused by many people in New Orleans. RUBARB has evolved into a full scale upper 9th ward community bike shop. A shop which began with programs such as bike lending, and bike building workshops has now become RUBARB.

RUBARB, today offers:
- Build a Bike options
- Earn a bike program for youth
- Open workshop hours
- Maintenance assistance
- Creative Art with bike themes
- Work Trade opportunities
- Monthly field trips for youth
The RUBARB crew can use a few good hands this fall to help work on bikes and/or with youth. you don't necessarily need to be a bike mechanic (although it helps!), but someone with a creative mind, patience, ability to be flexible and enjoy working with youth. we especially want to do some special projects and activities, so if you have a unique craft or skill, come join us! email us at buildit@rubarbike.org if interested.
Since reopening in the fall, there has consistently been many youth participating in the bike shop programs, such as earn-a-bike, end of day bike rides, planting around the shop, shop construction (we now have a bathroom!) a trip to the draw-a-thon, guest jugglers and crazy bikes, halloween parade, and a thanksgiving party. See the news for more details!
Volunteer at RUBARB! if you want to volunteer at the bike shop, drop in during shop hours to help out or use our contact form. We always love help from bike mechanics, people who work with youth, creative minds, or just anyone who wants to be a part of unique community bike shop..
